YALE UNIVERSITY

Sometimes, becoming a leader begins with having the time and space to discover who we truly are.

If Georgetown’s unique appeal comes from its location in the heart of Washington, D.C.—surrounded by the worlds of politics, diplomacy, and public policy—Yale University offers a different kind of experience: a place where students are given the space to grow, explore, discover themselves, and gradually decide who they want to become.

At the heart of life at Yale is its system of 14 Residential Colleges. These are much more than simply places to live. They are like “small homes” within a large university, where students become part of their own communities—surrounded by friends, upperclassmen, faculty members, and activities that allow learning to extend far beyond the classroom.

And one of the things I appreciate most about Yale is its academic flexibility.

At 17 or 18 years old, students do not need to have every answer figured out the moment they enter university.

They do not need to know,

“What am I going to be for the rest of my life?”

Students at Yale College have the opportunity to spend their early years exploring different subjects before choosing a major. In general, students can declare their major toward the end of their sophomore year, giving them time to experiment, change their minds, discover new interests, and—perhaps most importantly—understand themselves better before making that decision.

This may be one of the reasons Yale has developed such a powerful leadership ecosystem.

Leadership is not created through a single course or field of study. It grows when people with different ways of thinking, different interests, and different talents are brought together to live, learn, exchange ideas, and challenge one another.

And one of Yale’s most memorable stories is that of Bill Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton.

From the previous article, we already know that Bill Clinton completed his undergraduate studies at Georgetown University before becoming a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and later attending Yale Law School.

And it was at Yale Law School that Bill met Hillary Rodham.

Both studied law at Yale and earned their J.D. degrees in 1973. Their lives would eventually take them onto the world stage—Bill becoming the 42nd President of the United States, while Hillary went on to serve as a U.S. Senator and Secretary of State, and later became a presidential nominee.

For me, then, Yale’s appeal goes far beyond the words “Ivy League” or its position in university rankings.

It lies in a much deeper idea:

We do not need to rush into deciding what we will become before we have had the opportunity to discover who we are.

Because sometimes, a great university does more than guide us toward a destination we have already chosen.

It can introduce us to entirely new paths, new ideas, new people—and sometimes even to the person who will change the course of our lives forever.

Yale University — Lux et Veritas.
Light and Truth.
