Even as the world changes rapidly through AI, technology, and new business models, one thing remains the same: every organization still needs people who understand markets, finance, customers, strategy, people management, and how to grow a business. That is one of the reasons why Business continues to open the door to such a wide range of career opportunities.
But if you want to study Business, what should you look for when choosing a university?
For undergraduate study, I believe you shouldn’t look at rankings alone, and you don’t necessarily need to begin by asking which famous professors are teaching there. A strong Business School is also defined by the “Business Ecosystem” that students will be part of throughout their years at university.
A good place to start is by asking yourself which direction interests you most: Finance, Marketing, Management, Entrepreneurship, Economics, Business Analytics, or Technology & Innovation. Then look at how strong each university is in the area you want to pursue.
The next things to consider are Internship & Recruiting Opportunities, Alumni Network, Industry Connections, Career Outcomes, and Location. In Business, where you study can also influence who you meet, which industries you gain access to, and where you may have the opportunity to begin your career.
That is why different universities suit different students. Someone interested in Finance may look for one type of university, while a student who dreams of building a startup or working in Technology Business may be better suited to another. And for students who want to build their future in Asia, universities such as NUS, NTU, and SMU are becoming increasingly attractive choices.
So before asking,
“Which Business School has the highest ranking?”
I would encourage students to ask first,
“Which university has the Business Ecosystem that can take me toward the future I want?”
Because your dream university does not have to be the best university for everyone.
It should be the best university for your own path.
