Studying medicine is not simply about choosing the most famous university or the one with the highest ranking. The path to becoming a doctor can vary significantly from country to country — from the number of years of study and tuition fees to scholarships and medical licensing requirements.
🇹🇭 Thailand — Medical programs generally take around 6 years.
🇬🇧 UK — Students can apply for Medicine after completing high school qualifications such as A-Levels or IB, with most programs taking around 5–6 years.
🇸🇬 Singapore — Direct-entry medical programs are also available, such as NUS Medicine, which takes approximately 5 years. However, international students should carefully consider tuition fees, the Tuition Grant, and any associated service obligations.
🇭🇰 Hong Kong — Universities such as HKU and CUHK offer medical programs that generally take around 6 years, with certain scholarships available for international students.
🇺🇸 USA — The pathway is very different. Students typically need to complete a 4-year Bachelor’s degree before applying to Medical School, followed by approximately 4 years of MD training — meaning at least 8 years of study before entering Residency.
The cost of studying medicine also varies greatly. Some pathways in Thailand may cost a few hundred thousand baht per year, while studying abroad can cost several million baht annually.
And when we hear the words “scholarship available,” it is important to look beyond the headline. Does the scholarship cover full tuition or only part of it? Does it include living expenses? And are there any obligations or service commitments after graduation?
Another extremely important consideration is the medical license.
Graduating from medical school in one country does not automatically allow you to practise medicine in another. If you are considering returning to Thailand to work as a doctor, you should check whether the medical program is recognised and understand the pathway toward obtaining a Thai medical license before choosing your university.
Becoming a doctor — whether you study in Thailand, the UK, Singapore, Hong Kong, or the USA — requires years of competition, intensive study, clinical training, examinations, and ultimately, responsibility for the lives and well-being of others.
Because in the end, choosing Medicine is not simply about choosing a university.
