Want to Study AI… What Should You Look for First When Choosing a University?

As AI becomes one of the fastest-growing fields today, choosing a university should perhaps not begin with only one question: “Which university has the highest ranking?” Instead, it may be more useful to ask: “Which area of AI do I want to pursue, and how well can this university build the foundation I need?”

For undergraduate students, I would recommend looking at the curriculum before the ranking. AI is not simply about learning how to use AI tools. A strong foundation in Mathematics, Statistics, Programming, Algorithms, and Computer Science is essential before moving on to areas such as Machine Learning, Generative AI, NLP, Computer Vision, or Robotics.

The next thing to consider is who will be teaching you and how strong the university is in AI. This does not mean that undergraduates are expected to conduct research with world-renowned professors right away. However, a strong faculty often reflects the quality and variety of courses available, how up to date the curriculum is, the range of electives offered, and the overall academic environment students will experience.

Another important factor is opportunities outside the classroom, such as AI projects, hackathons, internships, student clubs, and collaborations with technology companies. These experiences can be what takes a student from simply “studying AI” to actually building AI and using it to solve real-world problems.

University rankings should then be considered as one of the final factors. Rankings can help provide a broader picture of a university’s reputation, overall quality, network, and opportunities after graduation—but they should not be treated as the complete answer.

So, for undergraduate students, I would suggest looking at these factors in this order:

Your Interests → Curriculum & Foundation → Faculty & AI Strength → Projects / Internships / Opportunities → University Fit → Ranking

Because in the rapidly changing world of AI,
don’t simply choose the university that is “the most famous.”
Choose the place that can give you a strong enough foundation to take you the furthest in the future.
