Top Universities in the U.S. Aren’t Just Ivy League

Top Universities in the U.S. Aren’t Just Ivy League

When it comes to studying in the United States, many families naturally start by looking at Harvard, Yale, Princeton, or other universities in the Ivy League. But the reality is that the U.S. is home to many other world-class universities that are not part of the Ivy League — and some are especially renowned for Research, Science, and Technology.

One of them is University of California, San Diego — UC San Diego (UCSD) 🌊

UC San Diego is a leading public research university located in La Jolla, California, along the Pacific Ocean. Founded in 1960, it has grown into a major research institution with more than 45,000 students and a diverse community representing more than 100 countries.

🔬 What makes UCSD stand out is its strong research ecosystem.

The university is particularly strong in fields such as Bioengineering, Biological Sciences, Computer Science & Engineering, Data Science, Cognitive Science, Chemistry & Biochemistry, as well as disciplines related to Medicine and Oceanography. In fiscal year 2025, UC San Diego received approximately US$1.7 billion in sponsored research funding.

🏅 Another fact that many families may not know is UC San Diego’s connection to Nobel Prize winners.

UCSD states that 16 Nobel laureates have taught at the university. Among its alumni and former students are several Nobel Prize recipients, including Susumu Tonegawa, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 1987; Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Nobel Prize in Chemistry 2009; Bruce Beutler, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2011; and Fred Ramsdell ’83, Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine 2025.

This reflects how UCSD’s reputation goes beyond rankings. Its research ecosystem provides students with opportunities to engage in world-class scientific research and discovery.

📚 UCSD also has a unique undergraduate college system.

Students belong to one of eight Undergraduate Colleges: Revelle, Muir, Marshall, Warren, Roosevelt, Sixth, Seventh, and Eighth College.

Your College does not determine your major. Instead, each College has its own General Education requirements, community, and educational philosophy, allowing students to experience a distinctive learning environment while pursuing their chosen field of study.

And being “not Ivy” certainly does not mean being easy to get into.

For Fall 2026, UC San Diego received approximately 141,700 first-year applications, with an overall admission rate of around 27%. The middle 50% GPA range for admitted students was 4.12–4.28.

🌎 So when planning to study in the U.S., ครูฮ้วง encourages students and families to look beyond the words “Ivy League.”

Stanford, MIT, Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UC San Diego are all examples of top universities that are not part of the Ivy League — and each has its own areas of excellence.

The best university is not necessarily the one with “Ivy” in its name.

Instead, look for a university that is strong in the field you want to study, offers research and career opportunities aligned with your goals, and provides an environment where you can grow to your full potential.

💙 UC San Diego — another clear example that
a World-Class University doesn’t have to be Ivy League.
