Beyond the curriculum, teaching quality, learning environment, and university counseling system, another important factor to consider is a school’s track record of consistently sending students to top universities.
But does a school’s history, or its record of students gaining admission to Ivy League universities in previous years, actually help with Ivy League applications?
The answer is yes. It can help by providing context and familiarity with the applicant’s school, but it does not guarantee admission. When universities regularly receive applications from the same school, admissions officers become more familiar with its curriculum, academic rigor, grading system, and school profile. This allows them to evaluate an applicant’s academic performance more accurately within the context of their school.
Yale identifies the transcript as one of the most important components of an application and evaluates academic performance alongside the curriculum, grading policies, school profile, and school context. Dartmouth similarly explains that a school profile helps admissions officers understand a school’s curriculum, grading system, academic capabilities, and the opportunities available to its students.
If graduates from a particular school consistently enroll at a university and perform well academically, this may help build familiarity with and confidence in that school’s academic standards over time. However, Ivy League universities do not automatically reserve admission spots for students from any particular school. Every applicant is still evaluated based on academic performance, course rigor, extracurricular activities, essays, teacher recommendations, and individual potential.
Therefore, before choosing a school based solely on tuition fees, parents should ask what kind of admissions data the school publishes. Does it report the number of offers received, the number of students who received offers, or the universities where students actually enrolled? And how consistent have these results been over several years?
These three figures can mean very different things.
