Many students believe that if they achieve a high IELTS score, they will automatically do well on the SAT Reading section.
But the truth is…
SAT Reading and IELTS Reading are designed to measure different skills.
The primary purpose of IELTS is to assess whether students have sufficient English proficiency to study and live in an English-speaking academic environment. As a result, it focuses on reading comprehension, identifying main ideas, locating information, and understanding a variety of academic texts.
SAT Reading, however, uses English as the medium—not the primary skill being assessed. What it truly measures is how you think.
Students are expected to question what they read, analyze an author’s reasoning, distinguish facts from opinions, connect ideas across multiple parts of a passage, and choose answers based on textual evidence rather than personal opinions or prior knowledge.
In other words:
IELTS asks: “How well do you understand English?”
SAT asks: “How well can you think critically, analyze information, and reason from what you read?”
This is why many students with strong English skills still find SAT Reading challenging. The missing piece is often not vocabulary or grammar—it is Critical Reading: the ability to read analytically, evaluate evidence, and think logically.
Ultimately, the SAT is not looking for students who simply have the strongest English skills.
It is looking for students who can read carefully, think critically, and reason systematically.
